On Gardening

In 1988 I grew the largest zucchini in the state of Michigan. In 2012, I grew 20 pounds of sweet potatoes in a single container. Today, my focus is more on flavor than size or quantity, except I still find lettuce leaf basil to be a wonder. My favorite herbs are French tarragon, green shiso, and celery leaf. I have grown fruit, vegetables, and herbs in temperate regions, in Mediterranean climates, and even in the desert.

On Design

Great homes and gardens always start with good design. I think that starts with having things around you that make you happy and that make it possible to do things you enjoy. It’s really that simple. Yes, good design makes life simpler.

"Life is the biggest event you'll ever attend. And it's happening now, right now. Don't waste any of it. Wring every ounce of joy from it that you can.
